    Dr. M.K. Seshadri Prize was instituted in 1977 by Smt. Seshadri in memory of her husband. This prize is awarded to an eminent scientist or institution whose original work has led to useful interventions or otherwise significant contribution to the practice of Community Medicine. The prize for the year 1998 is presented to Dr. Rajesh Kumar, Prof. and Head, Department of Community Medicine, Postgraduate Institute of Medical Education and Research, Chandigarh for his outstanding contributions in Community Medicine. Dr. Rajesh Kumar has contributed in the development of control programmes for neonatal tetanus, diarrhoeal diseases, acute respiratory infections and birth asphyxia, home based growth and development monitoring, breast self examination, syndromic management of reproductive tract infection/sexually transmitted diseases, and has developed rapid epidemiological assessment tools for measurement of morbidity, mortality and quality of care. In addition, he has developed a model rheumatic fever and rheumatic heart diseases (RF/RHD) control programme and implemented the same within the existing primary care infrastructure in a community involving school teachers and students. This model has demonstrated the feasibility of a national programme of RF/RHD control.

    The Sandoz Oration Award for research in Cancer was instituted in 1970 and is awarded annually to an eminent scientist for outstanding contributions to cancer research. The Award for the year 1998 is presented to Dr. Bhuvnesh Kumar Sharma, Deputy Director, Institute of Cytology and Preventive Oncology, New Delhi for his outstanding contributions in Cancer research. Dr. Sharma's main focus of research over the last 20 years has been to identify reliable molecular markers for the early detection of cervical cancer and to develop strategies for the rational designing of novel immunotherapeutic interventions. In recent years, he has also undertaken molecular oncologic studies on breast cancer which have led to a better understanding of the pathological process of breast cancer.

    The Dr.P.N.Raju Oration Award for research on any subject in Biomedical Sciences was instituted in 1965 by Dr.Narasimha Raju, a Medical Practitioner of Vishakhapatnam. The Award for 1998 is presented to Dr. Jagjit S. Saini, Additional Professor, Department of Ophthalmology, Postgraduate Institute of Medical Education and Research, Chandigarh for his outstanding work on Corneal Endothelium : function evaluation in clinical practice. Dr. Saini has been engaged in developing and validating several new techniques for assessing their efficacy, reliability and predictive value in corneal endothelium function in normal, post-operative and diabetic persons. The outcome of his research work has helped significantly in monitoring and choosing appropriate management strategies in diseases affecting the corneal endothelium.

    The Basanti Devi Amir Chand Prize is the oldest award of ICMR, instituted in 1953 by the late Major General Amir Chand for significant research contributions in Biomedical Sciences. The Prize for 1999 is being awarded to Dr. Viswanathan Mohan, Director, Madras Diabetes Research Foundation, Chennai for his contributions in the field of Diabetology i.e. for his work on the Natural history of diabetes in Indians with special reference to the prevalence and risk factors for complications of diabetes. Dr. Mohan has been working in the field of Diabetology for the last 20 years and has contributed significantly to information on the mechanism, causation and natural history of diabetes among south Indians. His work provides population-based data on prevalence and risk factors in diabetic complications like coronary artery disease, peripheral vascular disease, retinopathy, nephropathy and neuropathy. The data give valuable insights into the disease burden due to diabetes in India. His observations have great relevance since India already has the maximum number of diabetics in any given country in the world and diabetes is emerging as one of the silent killers in this country.
