    The Dr. B.R. Ambedkar Centenary Award for Excellence in Biomedical Research was instituted in the year 1991-92 as part of the Dr.Ambedkar Birth Centenary Celebrations. The award, of value Rupees one lakh, is awarded in alternate years for excellence in any field of biomedical research as evidenced by scientific publications in internationally recognised journals and contribution to advancement of knowledge and/or improvements in medical practices, health programmes etc. This Award is open to scientists of all age groups. The Award for 1999-2000 is being presented to Dr. Sandip Kumar Basu, Director, National Institute of Immunology, New Delhi, for the outstanding quality and importance of his research contributions, inspiring leadership in building and nurturing institutions of excellence in scientific research, exemplary initiatives, demonstrated success in fostering partnership between science and the healthcare industry in India and translating research leads into products. Dr. Basu pioneered the concept of receptor-mediated targeting of drugs as a new therapeutic approach against macrophage associated infections like kala-azar, tuberculosis, etc., and cancer. His highly innovative work, wholly done in India, also provides a new tool for targeting antigens to macrophages for generating predictable immune responses deemed essential for designing new vaccines and immunotherapeutics. His leadership has been successful in translating research outcome into product development through a strong industrial partnership, the most significant being a therapeutic vaccine against leprosy.

    The Dr. Dharamvir Dutta Memorial Oration Award was instituted by Dr. Usha Dutta in memory of her husband, Dr. Dharamvir Dutta, former Head of the Department of Hepatology, Postgraduate Institute of Medical Education & Research, Chandigarh. The prize for the year 1998 in being presented to Dr. Rakesh Aggarwal, Associate Professor, Department of Gastroenterology, Sanjay Gandhi Post-Graduate Institute of Medical Sciences, Lucknow for outstanding contributions in the field of hepatology i.e. for his work on Viral hepatitis. Dr. Aggarwal, a gastroenterologist, has been engaged in research in viral hepatitis for more than 10 years. His laboratory investigations helped in establishing hepatitis virus E (HEV) as the cause of a large outbreak in Uttar Pradesh. Epidemiological studies undertaken by him determined and clarified various factors such as person to person transmission relating to this largest epidemic of this disease in India. His research work has significantly contributed to the understanding of HEV infection.

    The Tilak Venkoba Rao award was instituted in 1982 by Dr. Parvathi Devi and Dr.A. Venkoba Rao in memory of their son, Tilak Venkoba Rao. This prize is given to scientists below the age of 40 years for outstanding work carried out in the fields of Psychological Medicine and Reproductive Physiology in alternate years. The award in the field of Reproductive Physiology for the year 1998 is being presented to Dr. Prabha S. Chandra, Associate Professor, Department of Psychiatry, National Institute of Mental Health and Neurosciences, Bangalore for outstanding contributions on Psychiatric morbidity related to reproductive and sexual health among Indian women. Dr. Chandra has been actively involved in in-depth studies to understand the complex interaction between a woman's mental state, biology and socio-cultural aspects. Important areas of her research include prevalence of premenstrual syndrome, influence of menstrual cycle related changes on the severity of psychiatric disorders, mood disorder among infertile women and psychological aspects of gynecological cancer. She has had in-depth training in psycho-oncology and cognitive dysfunction and psychiatric morbidity in HIV/AIDS.

    The Shakuntala Amir Chand Prizes for significant contributions to biomedical sciences by young scientists were instituted by late Major General Amir Chand in 1953. A Shakuntala Amir Chand Prize for 1998 is being presented to Dr.Radha Krishan Dhiman, Associate Professor, Department of Hepatology, Postgraduate Institute of Medical Education and Research, Chandigarh for his research work on the Prognostic evaluation of early indicators in fulminant hepatic failure. Dr. Dhiman has been working in the field of Gastroenterology and Hepatology since 1988. He has carried out significant research in evaluating the prognostic significance of several early indicators of fulminant hepatic failure in the Indian population. He observed that factors, like the presence of overt clinical features of raised intracranial pressure and prothrombin time of 100 seconds on admission, onset of encephalopathy a week after onset of jaundice and age of 50 years among Indian patients have adverse effect on the prognosis of the disease. He also devised a new psychometric test, the Figure Connection Test for assessing the mental status in patients with cirrhosis of the liver. This test has the advantage of universal applicability.

    The Shakuntala Amir Chand Prizes for significant contributions to biomedical sciences by young scientists were instituted by late Major General Amir Chand in 1953. A Shakuntala Amir Chand Prize for 1998 is being presented to Dr.Amita Aggarwal, Assistant Professor of Immunology, Sanjay Gandhi Post Graduate Institute of Medical Sciences, Lucknow, for significant research contributions in autoimmune rheumatic diseases. Dr. Aggarwal has been investigating the clinical expression of juvenile rheumatoid arthritis and observed that the presence of IgM rheumatoid factor demonstrated by ELISA and not latex agglutination, predicts a more severe disease outcome. Her studies also indicate that activation of complement by an alternate pathway is more important than activation by the classical pathway in the pathogenesis of rheumatoid arthritis. These results have provided a new insight and have led to a better understanding of the pathogenesis of autoimmune rheumatic diseases.

    The Amrut Mody Unichem prize was instituted by Unichem Laboratories in 1985. This prize is awarded to an eminent scientist for outstanding work carried out in the fields of Cardiology and Neurology, and Gastroenterology in alternate years. The prize for 1998 in the field of Neurology is being presented to Dr.P.Satishchandra, Professor of Neurology, National Institute of Mental Health and Neurosciences, Bangalore for his outstanding research contribution in Epilepsy. Dr. Satishchandra has been working in the field of Neurology with special interest in epilepsy for the last 20 years. His most significant contribution has been in the area of hot water epilepsy, which is an unique form of reflex epilepsy seen in southern India. He has analyzed the clinical characteristics of this unique disorder and undertaken neuro-epidemiological studies. Based on epidemiological and experimental work he has hypothesised that hot water epilepsy is probably due to hyperthermic kindling as a result of an aberrant thermo-regulatory system. Dr.Satishchandra and his team have successfully managed these patients with a modified treatment regimen. The contributions made by Dr. Satishchandra have led to a better understanding of the pathogenesis of the novel types of epilepsy.

Dr. Chaturvedi has carried out a number of studies in the areas of quality of life in health and disease, a neglected area of research in our country so far. His main areas of research have centered around studying the quality of life in different disorders, study of cancer pain, psychiatric aspects of cancer and psychological aspects of women's health. He is a recipient of the Tilak Venkoba Rao Award for the years 1988 and 1992 for research on chronic pain and psychosomatics and for research on women's mental health.

    This prize was instituted by the ICMR in 1983 for scientists who have contributed significantly to any field of biomedical sciences in underdeveloped areas. The Prize for 1998 is being awarded to Dr. Ravindran Ankathil, Associate Professor, Regional Cancer Centre, Thiruvananthapuram for studies on the Role of investigative cytogenetics and genetics counselling services in the health management of genetically disabled patients and leukaemic patients in Kerala. Dr. Ankathil established cytogenetic and genetic counselling services in the state of Kerala, where such facilities did not exist earlier. After setting up these facilities he has been investigating patients with or suspected genetic disorders among the newborn, children and adults. His work has been significant in providing healthcare to infants and counselling for the families. Furthermore, he has been studying choromosomal abnormalities in different types of leukaemia which has helped in the cytogenetic subtype classification. The work carried out by Dr.Ankathil has had a significance impact in the diagnosis and treatment of genetic disorders in Kerala.

The prize for the year 1998 is being presented to Dr. Gopal Krushna Pal, Associate Professor, Department of Physiology, Jawaharlal Institute of Postgraduate Medical Education and Research, Pondicherry in the field of Neurophysiology. Dr. Pal has made significant contributions in the area of neurophysiological regulation of food and water intake in rats. He has documented that lesions of the nucleus accumbens and caudatus produce significant decrease in food and water intake. His research has contributed to a better understanding of the neurophysiology of ingestive behaviour.
