Dr Surolia has been working in the field of molecular biology and genetics of parasites for more than two decades. Her experimental work on malarial parasite has led to the identification of novel targets for antimalarial drug development. She found that chloroquine sequesters heme which leads to the inhibition of protein synthesis and hence the death of the malarial parasite. She also showed that the malarial parasite is capable of synthesizing its own heme. Dr Surolia is a fellow/ member of several scientific bodies and has about 40 publications to her credit.

This award was instituted in 1982 while celebrating the Silver Jubilee of Blood Group Reference Centre at Bombay, now called Institute of Immunohaematology. This prize is awarded to an eminent scientist for outstanding work in the field of Haematology and Immunohaematology. The award for 2000 is being presented to Dr Shrimati Dharamapal Shetty, Research Officer, Institute of Immunohaematology, Mumbai, for her research work on 'Genetic diagnosis and preventive strategy for haemophiliacs'. Dr Shetty's thrust area of research has been the molecular genetics of haemophilia. She has developed the RFLP based carrier detection and prenatal diagnostic techniques in haemophilia A & B. She has identified different RFLP markers for factor VIII & IX genes and used these markers in genetic diagnosis of haemophilia. Dr Shetty has also developed the cold blood sampling technique for the first time in the country in which the fetal blood is directly tested for factor VIII & IX procoagulant activity and antigen using ELISA. Due to lack of genetic diagnostic facilities in most of the laboratories in our country, this technique helps in the early detection of haemophilia. She has over 60 publications in national/international scientific journals.
