The Dr. M.O. T. Iyengar Memorial Award was instituted in 1983 by Smt.
Rukmani Iyengar to honour a scientist for carrying out research in the field of
malaria, filariasis, plague or medical entomology.
The award for the year 2007 is being presented to Dr Brij Kishore Tyagi,
Scientist 'G' & Director in-Charge, ICMR's Centre for Research in Medical
Entomology, Madurai for his research work on 'Medical Entomology'.
Dr Tyagi has done extensive research work on malaria in The Thar Desert
and coined the term 'desert malaria' defining classification of the Thar's
physiography based on the distribution of malaria vectors, besides developing
a tanka lid for preventing the breeding of the local vector species, Anopheles
stephensi. His work on the dengue vector, Aedes albopictus, in Kerala has redefined
dynamics of the disease and its control aspects. Dr Tyagi, along with his team,
promoted the thesis of advantageous use of a single annual dose of
DEC - albendazole, compared to only DEC, in eliminating human lymphatic
filariasis in the affected endemic population in Tamil Nadu, particularly when
the vector control was used as an adjunct to the MDA programme. Dr Tyagi has
extensively promoted the science of mosquito taxonomy by undertaking
revision of the Fauna of British India.
Dr Tyagi has authored over 400 articles, many of which were published in
international scientific journals. He has also authored - edited 15 books, in
addition to a patent to his credit. He has been felicitated with the WHO - TDR's
First Prize for the best conceptual drawing for future decadal achievement in
2006.
