Smt. Kamal Satbir Award was instituted in 1987 by Commodore Satbir, AVSM, I.N. (Retd.) in
memory of wife Smt Kamal for significant research contribution by young scientists in biomedical
sciences. This prize is awarded for the best published research work on in the field of non-tuberculous
Chest Diseases, especially Respiratory Allergy and Chronic Obstructive Lung Diseases pertaining
to mechanism and causation of the diseases, their prevention and / or management. The award
for the year 2016 is being presented to Dr. Sahajal Dhooria, Department of Pulmonary Medicine,
Postgraduate Institute of Medical Education and Research, Chandigarh for the research works on
'Role of endobronchial ultrasound in the diagnosis of mediastinal diseases'.
Dr. Dhooria has been systematically exploring the nuances of the endobronchial ultrasound
technology. His team found that certain ultrasound features of mediastinal lymph nodes can help in
distinguishing tuberculosis from sarcoidosis. He also reported the first experience from the country
on endoscopic ultrasound with an echobronchoscope, a useful modification of endobronchial
ultrasound.
