This prize is awarded for the best published research work on any subject in the field of biomedical science including clinical research. The award for the year 2016 is being presented to Dr. Amit Mishra, Indian Institute of Technology, Jodhpur for the research work on 'Protein quality control mechanisms: Implicated in ageing and neurodegeneration'. Dr. Mishra examined that how a well-known Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug lbuprofen is linked with proteasomal dysfunction. This finding generates new insights for effective anti-tumor strategies and consequently helps in neurodegeneration. He also investigated the hidden potential function of Mahogunin ring finger -1 protein against proteotoxicity of Huntington's disease.

The ICMR Kshanika Oration Award was instituted in 1977 by Dr K. N. Sen, former Professor of Medicine, School of Tropical Medicine, Kolkata. This prize is awarded to a woman scientist for her meritorious work carried out in any of the branches of Biomedical Sciences. The award for the year 2016 is being presented to Dr. Ellora Sen, National Brain Research Centre, Gurugram for the research work on 'Inflammation induced metabolic switches: implications in tumorigenesis'. Dysregulated metabolism and aberrant inflammation are characteristic features of Glioblastoma multiforme - the most aggressive malignant brain tumor which is largely resistant to current therapeutic regimens. Dr. Sen's research work has offered the prospect for anti-glioma therapies aimed at targeting inflammation driven aberrant metabolism associated with resistance to chemotherapeutics and immune evasion.
