    The Dr. Y.S. Narayana Rao Oration Award was instituted by Smt. Kamala Narayana Rao in 1972, in memory of her husband, late Dr Y.S. Narayana Rao, former Director of King Institute of Preventive Medicine, Guindy, Chennai. It is an award given to a scientist for carrying out sustained research work in the field of microbiology. The award for the year 2014 is being presented to Dr Shanta Dutta, ICMR-National Institute of Cholera and Enteric Diseases, Kolkata for the research work on 'Molecular characterization of enteric bacteria'. Dr. Dutta is a clinical microbiologist and is actively involved in carrying out research on diarrhoeal diseases for over two decades. She has contributed both in basic and in applied studies. Development of rapid diagnostics, preparing anti-bacterial herbal formulations, characterizing antimicrobial resistance of enteric bacteria and their molecular subtypes are some of her major research activities.

    The Dr. V. N. Patwardhan Prize was instituted in 1973 by Smt. Shanta Patwardhan in memory of her husband Dr. V.N. Patwardhan, former Director of the ICMR-National Institute of Nutrition, Hyderabad. This prize is awarded to a scientist below 40 years of age for outstanding work carried out in India on fundamental, clinical or field studies in 'Nutritional Sciences'. The award for the year 2014 is being presented to Dr. G.M. SubbaRao, ICMR-National Institute of Nutrition, Hyderabad for the research work on 'Nutrition communication and social and behavioral aspects in food safety'. Dr. SubbaRao demonstrated the usefulness of unconventional media and methods using normative social cognitive approaches. Employing qualitative social science techniques, his research also examined knowledge, perceptions and behavioral aspects affecting food safety at household level. He has been strongly arguing to revisit the global/local food safety policies to include a gamut of social, behavioral, cultural aspects that make the enabling environment.

Dr. Avasthi has contributed significantly to the speciality of Psychiatry. His research interests include clinical research in schizophrenia, anxiety and mood disorders, human sexuality and its dysfunctions, and consultation-liaison psychiatry. He is pioneer of low cost model of conducting multicentric studies and instrumental for bringing out clinical practice guidelines for management of various psychiatric disorders.

    The Dr. P. N. Raju Oration Award was instituted in 1965 by Dr. Narsimha Raju, a medical practitioner of Vishakhapatnam. This prize is awarded to a scientist for his/her work in any subject of national importance in the field of medicine or public health. The award for year 2014 is being presented to Dr. Anand Krishnan, Centre for Community Medicine, All India Institute of Medical Sciences, New Delhi for the research work on 'Closing the gaps: Linking research surveillance and program in non-communicable diseases'. Dr. Krishnan, in his work with communities, governments and international agencies spanning 15 years, has promoted a public health approach to non-communicable diseases (NCDs). He has worked in developing tools for surveillance, supported NCD risk factor surveys in India and elsewhere in South-East Asian Region. He has developed primary health care delivery models for NCDs and also drafted NCD related multi-sectoral strategies at national and international level.

    The Dr M.K. Seshadri Prize was instituted in 1977 by Smt. Seshadri in memory of her husband. It is offered to a scientist for outstanding contributions made in the field of community medicine. The award for the year 2014 is being jointly presented to Dr. Anil Kumar Gupta, Deep Chand Bandhu Hospital, Delhi for his research work on 'Social protection, early diagnosis and treatment of children with HIV'. While working at Delhi State AIDS Control Society, Delhi, based on a pilot study, Dr. Gupta recommended to initiate anti retroviral treatment ( ART) in infant immediately when first virological test is positive and simultaneously a second specimen should be taken to aid in decision to continue ART.

Dr. Tiwari has shown that the females are more vulnerable to respiratory disorders when exposed to different dust and chemicals at workplace because of multiple insults to their respiratory system from second-hand smoke and bad cooking fuels. Working children is another important vulnerable group which not only lag behind in the school going children group in physical and mental development but is also susceptible to numerous hazardous occupational exposure and diseases.

    The Drs. Kunti & Om Prakash Oration Award was instituted in 2005 by Messrs Vipul and Rahul Prakash in memory of their parents, Drs. Kunti and Om Prakash. This award is conferred on a scientist for excellence achieved in the field of biomedical sciences. The award for the year 2014 is being jointly presented to Dr. Poonam Salotra, Molecular Parasitology Lab, ICMR-National Institute of Pathology, New Delhi for the research work on 'Studies on vaccine development, diagnostics, immunobiology and mechanism of drug resistance in visceral and cutaneous leishmaniasis'. Dr. Salotra has made seminal contributions in the field of leishmaniasis. Her studies on pathogen genomics, mechanism of drug resistance, understanding of Leishmania biology and host-parasite interactions are of immediate relevance. Candidate vaccine is in pre-clinical trials and the diagnostics developed by her are in use in referral laboratories.

This award is conferred on a scientist for excellence achieved in the field of biomedical sciences. The award for the year 2014 is being jointly presented to Dr. Premashis Kar, Department of Medicine, Maulana Azad Medical College, New Delhi for the research work on 'Infectious disease'. In viral hepatitis, high levels of soluble Fas ligand (sFasL) and tumor necrosis factor (TNF-alpha) predict death and timely referral to transplant-centre. Reduced expression of progesterone-receptor (PR) and progesterone-induced-blocking-factor (PIBF) with high viral load predict poor pregnancy outcome in hepatitis E. High hepatitis A virus (HAV) and gestational hepatitis E virus (HEV) viral loads correlate with severity of liver disease. In acute liver failure, expression of inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS) and endothelial nitric oxide synthase (eNOS) predispose to massive necrosis of liver.

The award for the year 2014 is being presented to Dr. Lalit Kumar, Department of Medical Oncology, All India Institute of Medical Sciences, New Delhi for the research work on 'Multiple myeloma- Understanding biology and role of autologous stem cell transplantation'. Dr. Kumar has made seminal contributions to the field of multiple myeloma. In addition to find out the best regimen for initial treatment of myeloma, his research has focused on the role of bone marrow microenvironment and interplay of genetic abnormalities, cytokines and regulatory T cells in the pathogenesis of myeloma. His team has a rich experience of treating myeloma patients with autologous stem cell transplantation.

    The Smt. Kamal Satbir Award was instituted in 1987 by Commodore Satbir, AVSM, I.N. (Retd.) in memory of wife Smt. Kamal for significant research contribution by young scientists in biomedical sciences. This prize is awarded for the best published research work in the field of non-tubrculous Chest Diseases, especially Respiratory Allergy and Chronic Obstructive Lung Diseases pertaining to mechanism and causation of the diseases, their prevention and / or management. The award for the year 2014 is being presented to Dr. Navneet Singh, Department of Pulmonary Medicine, Postgraduate Institute of Medical Education and Research, Chandigarh for the research work on 'Clinico - epidemiological profile of lung cancer in north India and its association with quantified tobacco smoking'. Dr. Singh's work on lung cancer focuses on molecular biology, epidemiology, symptom assessment using simple scoring systems and management in resource constrained settings. His work demonstrated geographical diversity in the epidemiological profile of lung cancer within India and also that there are several differences from developed countries. Quantified tobacco smoke exposure has a significant and important association with the clinical profile of lung cancer patients at diagnosis.
