The ICMR Kshanika Oration Award was instituted in 1977 by Dr. K. N. Sen, former Professor of
Medicine, School of Tropical Medicine, Kolkata to be awarded to an eminent woman scientist for
her meritorious work carried out in any of the branch of biomedical sciences. The award for the
year 2015 is being presented to Dr. Neelima Mishra, Scientist E, ICMR-National Institute of Malaria
Research, Dwarka, New Delhi for the research work on 'Malaria'.
Dr. Mishra's studies on antimalarial drug resistance including molecular markers under
Nationwide sentinel site system in collaboration with National programme has provided evidence
of increased treatment failure, leading to change of drug policy for falciparum malaria in 7 states of
North-East. As a lead investigator, she has developed novel diagnostic method for detecting different
species of Plasmodium with detection limit of less then1 parasite/microlitre blood.
