    The ICMR Smt. Swaran Kanta Dingley Oration Award, was instituted in 1984 by late Dr H.B. Dingley, for the contributions made by a researcher in the field of Reproductive Biology. The award for the year 2009 is being presented to Dr Nafisa Huseni Balasinor, Scientist-E, ICMR's National Institute for Research in Reproductive Health, Mumbai for her research work on 'Role of estrogen in male fertility'. Using tamoxifen treated rat models, her research group has demonstrated the role of estrogen in acquisition and maintenance of genomic imprint marks during spermatogenesis. They have also shown the importance of paternal aberrant imprinting in causing post implantation embryo loss in rats and humans. In addition, Dr Balasinor's group has also been involved in understanding the role of estrogen in the process of sperm release from testis in adult rats. These studies elucidate the mechanism through which endocrine disruptors like xenoestrogens may affect male germ line and cause compromised male fertility. Dr Balasinor has published over 40 research papers in international journals. She has received G.P. Talwar Middle Career Scientist Award.

    The ICMR Chaturvedi Kalawati Jagmohan Das Memorial Award was instituted in 1985 by Dr S.P. Chaturvedi in memory of his parents for work in the field of Cardiovascular Diseases. The award for the year 2009 is being presented to Dr Surjit Singh, Head, Allergy Immunology Unit and Professor of Pediatrics, Advanced Pediatrics Centre, Postgraduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGIMER), Chandigarh for his research work on 'Kawasaki disease- a common cause of preventable acquired heart disease in children, our experience at PGIMER, Chandigarh'. Dr Singh has been involved in the diagnosis, treatment and long-term followup of children with kawasaki disease (KD). At present, he follows one of the largest cohorts of KD in the country. His work has shown that KD may perhaps be the commonest vasculitic disorder amongst children in India. He started using intravenous immunoglobulin (IVIg) for treatment of children with this condition. He has also shown that the clinical phenotype of KD in India is significantly different from that in the developed countries. Dr Singh has further shown that KD is not merely a one-time disease of childhood - it has significant long-term sequelae. Dr Singh's work has also shown that endothelial dysfunction may persist long after the subsidence of the acute phase of this condition. Dr Singh is a Fellow of the National Academy of Medical Sciences, New Delhi, the Indian Academy of Pediatrics, the Indian College of Allergy and Applied Immunology, the Royal College of Physicians (London) and the Royal College of Pediatrics and Child Health (London). He has more than 200 publications in peer-reviewed journals.

    The ICMR Chaturvedi Ghanshyam Das Jaigopal Memorial Award was instituted in 1985 by Shri S.P. Chaturvedi in memory of his grandfather- for the eminent work carried out by a scientist in the field of Immunology. The award for the year 2009 is being presented to Dr P. Selvaraj, Scientist-E, Department of Immunology, ICMR's National Institute for Research in Tuberculosis, Chennai for his research work on 'Vitamin D3 and vitamin D receptor gene polymorphisms on immunity to tuberculosis'. Dr Selvaraj has expanded the knowledge on the immunomodulatory effects of vitamin D3 on the innate and adaptive immune functions in tuberculosis. Vitamin D3 acts through vitamin D receptor (VDR) present in various cells of the immune system. Dr Selvaraj has demonstrated that vitamin D3 enhances the macrophage phagocytic potential with live Mycobacterium tuberculosis and the production of cathelicidin (anti-microbial peptide) by the infected macrophages, which may control the growth of M. tuberculosis at the site of infection. Dr Selvaraj also reported the association of 5 regulatory region polymorphisms of VDR gene with susceptibility to pulmonary tuberculosis and decreased IFN- and increased IL-10 (anti-inflammatory) responses in tuberculosis. He has established that the polymorphic variants of VDR gene regulate vitamin D3 modulated immune functions in tuberculosis. Dr Selvaraj has published over 80 research papers in national and international journals.

    The Dr M.O. T. Iyengar Memorial Award was instituted in 1983 by Smt. Rukmani Iyengar to honour a scientist for carrying out research in the field of malaria, filariasis, plague or medical entomology. The award for the year 2009 is being presented to Prof. R.B. Narayanan, Professor of Biotechnology and Director, Centre for Food Technology, Anna University, Chennai for his research work on 'Immune mechanisms in human filarial infections'. Dr Narayanan's group has focused its efforts on the development of technology for the production of pure recombinant proteins from Brugia malayi and the endosymbiont Wolbachia in the preceding five years as the antigens are difficult to obtain from the infective organisms and they are stage specific. His group has also investigated the cellular and humoral immune responses following vaccination with a recall antigen like tetanus toxoid in patients with lymphatic filariasis. In addition, Dr Narayanan was an Investigator in the IndoUS PL480 funded project on lymphatic filariasis and WHO sponsored filarial genome project. Dr Narayanan has published over 100 research papers in the peer reviewed international and national journals.

    The Dr J.B. Srivastav Oration Award was instituted in 1978 by Mrs. J. Srivastav in 1978, in memory of her husband Dr J.B. Srivastav, former Director-General of Health Services, for work in the field of Virology. The award for the year 2009 is being presented to Dr Paban Kumar Dash, Scientist-E, Division of Virology, DRDO's Defence Research and Development Establishment, Gwalior for his research work on 'Molecular diagnosis and phylogenetic analysis of emerging arboviruses (dengue, chikungunya and Japanese encephalitis) in India'. Dr Dash's research work is primarily directed towards molecular characterization and phylogenetic analysis of emerging arboviruses of biomedical importance (dengue, chikungunya and Japanese encephalitis) and development of suitable rapid diagnostics against these infections. The complete genome information of Indian dengue and chikungunya viruses were deciphered by his group. His research also led to development of a battery of advanced molecular diagnostics including RT-PCR, duplex & multiplex RT-PCR, real time quantitative RT-PCR and RT-LAMP techniques for arboviruses. His other research contributions include immunological diagnostic assays and RNA interference based molecular therapeutics for arboviruses. Dr Dash is a recipient of 'DRDO Young Scientist Award- 2006' and 'Brig. S. K. Mazumdar Young Scientist Award- 2003'. He has published more than 35 research papers in national and international journals.

    The Dr D.N. Prasad Memorial Oration Award was instituted in 1991 by Dr G.V. Satyavati, former Director General, Indian Council of Medical Research for work in the field of Pharmacology. The award for the year 2009 is being presented to Dr Bikash Medhi, Additional Professor, Department of Pharmacology, Postgraduate Institute of Medical Education and Research, Chandigarh for his research work on 'Experimentally induced various inflammatory models and seizure: Understanding the role of cytokine in rat. And Intestinal inflammation and seizure- Understanding the role of TNF in rat model'. Dr Medhi has expatiated the knowledge of epilepsy, its treatment and relation to the different chronic inflammatory conditions. He has studied the role of TNF- in altering the seizure threshold in the inflammatory models of acetic acid colitis, adjuvant arthritis and cotton wool granuloma (CWG) in rats. Dr Medhi has also studied immunomodulatory role of thalidomide in colitis and arthritis model and also evaluate the COX-2 inhibitor etoricoxib in CWG model and has significantly contributed the role of thalidomide and etoricoxib in altering the seizure threshold. In addition, role of Ma-nuka honey has been also been studied in different models of inflammation which showed the high level of antioxidant properties and reduced the inflammation, DNA fragmentation and pathological improvements. Dr Medhi was awarded Dr B. N. Ghosh Oration of the Indian Pharmacology Society (IPS) in 2010. He has published over 150 research papers in international and national journals.

    The Dr B.R. Ambedkar Centenary Award for excellence in biomedical research was instituted in the year 1991-92 as part of the Dr Ambedkar Birth Centenary Celebrations. It is awarded to a scientist for excellence in any field of biomedical research. The award for the year 2009 is being presented to Dr Vinod K. Paul, Professor and Head, Department of Paediatrics, All India Institute of Medical Sciences, New Delhi. Dr Paul's contribution to biomedical research in newborn health is exceptional and far reaching. He developed a low cost, indigenous, lung surfactant to treat hyaline membrane disease which is the major cause of mortality among preterm neonates. He elucidated the association of maternal genital tract infections due to mycoplasmas and chlamydiae with low birth weight. The WHO multicountry studies by Dr Paul as a core investigator have formed the basis of global recommendations on neonatal Integrated Management of Childhood Illness and LBW feeding guidelines. Likewise, Dr Paul's study on Kangaroo Mother Care led to acceleration in the uptake of this modality in India. Dr Paul has been instrumental in establishing the National NeonatalPerinatal Database Network of India in the nineties, a lasting nucleus for multisite clinical research in neonatology. Dr Paul has made an exceptional contribution to the health policy and programmes in the country, in particular - the maternal and child health strategy of RCH, Integrated Management of Neonatal and Childhood Illness (IMNCI), the ASHA programme, the Navjat Shishu Suraksha Karyakram and the Universal Health Coverage paradigm. Dr Paul is recognized as a leading expert in newborn health globally. He played a decisive role in placing neonatal survival at the centre of global efforts to attain the MDG 4, and in developing approaches to embed neonatal health interventions in country programmes. He has authored over 300 scientific publications.

    The Smt. Kamal Satbir Award was instituted in 1987 by Commodore Satbir, AVSM, I.N. (Retd) in memory of his wife for work in the field of nontuberculous, chest diseases, especially respiratory allergy and chronic, obstructive lung diseases, pertaining to, mechanism and causation of the diseases, their prevention and/or management. The award for the year 2009 is being presented to Dr Ritesh Agarwal, Associate Professor, Department of Pulmonary Medicine, Postgraduate Institute of Medical Education and Research, Chandigarh for his research work on 'Allergic bronchopulmonary aspergillosis (ABPA)'. Dr Agarwal has been systematically exploring this disease over the last seven years and reported the epidemiology, diagnosis, management, and several descriptions. His research demonstrated a high prevalence of ABPA in outpatient asthmatics in India and across the globe, thus emphasizing the need for the routine screening of all asthmatics for ABPA. Further, his research has identified predictors of recurrent relapses in this group of patients. Dr Agarwal has more than 225 publications in national and international journals. He is also the coordinator of the working group on allergic bronchopulmonary aspergillosis complicating asthmatics formed under the auspices of the International Society for Human and Animal Mycology.

    The Shakuntala Amir Chand Prize was instituted in 1953 by late Major General Amir Chand for significant research contribution by young scientists in biomedical sciences. This prize is awarded for the best published research work on any subject in the field of biomedical science including clinical research. The award for the year 2009 is being presented to Lieutenant Colonel (Dr) K.V.S. Hari Kumar, Endocrinologist at Command Hospital, Central Command, Lucknow for his research work on 'Role of ultrasonography and colour Doppler study in the diagnosis and management of thyrotoxicosis'. Dr Hari Kumar has made pioneering contributions in establishing the role of ultrasonography as an alternate method for nuclear imaging in the management of thyrotoxicosis with similar sensitivity and specificity. His research findings are useful to both the physicians and patients as sonography gives instant results, is widely available and cheap in comparison to nuclear imaging. The seminal research by Dr Hari Kumar and his colleagues extends the benefits of ultrasonography in the evaluation of thyrotoxicosis during pregnancy where the nuclear imaging is contraindicated. Currently, his research is focused on the use of sonography as an alternate method for estimation of thyroid hormones in the follow up of thyrotoxicosis patients. Dr Hari Kumar was awarded Dr A R Seth Memorial Gold Medal - 2007 by the Endocrinology Society of India, Young Scientist Award - 2011 by Brigadier SK Mazumdar Memorial Trust, New Delhi and Thyroid Rising Star Oration - 2013 by the Indian Thyroid Society. He has published more than 100 research publications in peer reviewed national and international journals.

This prize is awarded for the best published research work on any subject in the field of biomedical science including clinical research. The award for the year 2009 is being presented to Dr Kamla Prasad Mishra, Scientist-C, DRDO's Defence Institute of Physiology and Allied Sciences (DIPAS), Delhi for his research work on 'Herbs for the health- Immunomodulatory potential of high altitude medicinal plants'. Dr Mishra has made significant contributions in the area of immunomodulation. The research work carried out by him on number of medicinal plants of high altitude origin viz. Sea buckthorn and Rhodiola were found promising for its immunomodulatory/immunostimulatory properties. These medicinal plants were transformed into neutraceuticals to improve the efficiency of the troops at high altitude and also to mitigate the diseases by strengthening the immune system. The Herbal adjuvant derived from Sea buckthorn leaf has been selected under DRDO-FICCI-ATAC program as promising product. Currently, he is developing plant based vaccine adjuvants and antivirals. Dr Mishra has been awarded Young Scientist Award-2010 by UP Council of Science & Technology. He has published more than 35 research publications in national and international journals.
