The Shakuntala Amir Chand Prize was instituted in 1953 by late Major
General Amir Chand for significant research contribution by young scientists
in biomedical sciences. This prize is awarded for the best published research
work on any subject in the field of biomedical science including clinical research.
The award for the year 2010 is being presented to Dr P. Yogeeswari,
Associate Professor and Head, Department of Pharmacy, BIT & Science Pilani,
Hyderabad campus, Hyderabad for her research work on 'Drug discovery for
neurological disorders mainly neuropathic pain'.
Prof. Yogeeswari has been involved in drug discovery research for
neurological disorders for more than a decade. Her approach includes
structure-based drug design on various targets of the brain that include
cathepsin S, rho kinase, beta-secretase, adenosine receptors, etc. involved in
various diseases like epilepsy, neuropathy including sciatica, diabetic
neuropathy, trigeminal neuralgia and Alzheimer's.
Prof. Yogeeswari has to her credit more than 160 research papers and one
Indian patent application.
