    The Professor B. K. Aikat Oration Award was instituted by Dr. Meera Aikat in 1984 in memory of her husband Prof. B. K. Aikat, a biomedical scientist. This award is conferred upon a scientist for the research work carried out in the field of tropical diseases. The Award for the year 2016 is being presented to Dr. Kashi Nath Prasad, Department of Microbiology, Sanjay Gandhi Postgraduate Institute of Medical Sciences, Lucknow for the research work on 'What trigger seizure in patients with neurocysticerosis?' Dr. Prasad conducted epidemiological studies on neurocysticercosis in pig-farming community and observed active epilepsy rate 5.8 Percent. Neurocysticercosis was identified in 48 Percent of active epilepsy patients and 15 Percent of asymptomatic populations. Host immune response to parasite, and TLR-4, MMP-9, ICAM-1 and GST polymorphisms played important role for seizure occurrence in neurocysticercosis.

This prize is awarded to a scientist for work in the field of community medicine carried out in medical colleges/recognized institutions. The Award for the year 2016 is being presented to Dr. Ajeet Singh Bhadoria, Assistant Professor in Epidemiology, Department of Clinical Research, Institute of Liver and Biliary Sciences, Vasant Kunj, New Delhi for the research work on 'Prevalence of non-communicable disease (NCD) risk factors utilizing WHO-STEPS approach among urban and rural (tribal) population residing at Jabalpur district of Central India', screening above 900 adults. Dr. Bhadoria has published about 60 scientific articles and also has written chapters for professional development course at NIHFW. He is Project Coordinator to WHO Collaborating Centre on Viral Hepatitis and Liver Disease. He's regularly contributing as an expert advisory group member towards development of not only national but also South East Asia regional action plan on viral hepatitis.

    The Novartis Oration Award for Research in the field of Cancer was originally instituted in 1970 by M/s Sandoz India Limited in the field of Cancer Research and renamed as Novartis Oration Award after the merger of Sandoz India Ltd. with Hindustan Ciba-Geigy Ltd. in 1997. This prize is conferred upon a scientist for his/her contributions in the field of cancer research carried out for the control, prevention and cure of cancer. The award for the year 2016 is being presented to Dr. Sib Sankar Roy, Cell Biology and Physiology Division, CSIR-Indian Institute of Chemical Biology, Kolkata for the work on 'Molecular Mechanisms of invasiveness and proliferation of ovarian cancer cells'. Dr. Roy has significantly contributed in understanding the involvement of novel pathways, generegulatory factors, growth factors and on cometabolites to unravel the mechanism of ovarian cancer progression, including EMT/invasion and contributed to the investigation of its amelioration. His research contribution also includes how metabolic reprogramming favors oncogenesis in tumour cells.

Dr. Yachha described safe quantified large volume paracentesis, postulated pathogenesis of hepato-pulmonary syndrome, defined predictors of outcome in viral hepatitis and coagulopathy, showed effective medical management of Budd-Chiari Syndrome, and identified 'high-risk' liver abscess treatable without surgery.

The award for year 2016 is being presented to Dr. Deepak Bansal, Hematology-Oncology unit, Department of Paediatrics, Advanced Paediatrics Centre, Post Graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research, Chandigarh for the research work on 'Imatinib has adverse effect on growth in children with chronic myeloid leukemia'. Prof. Bansal demonstrated growth retardation to be a significant adverse effect of imatinib in children with CML. Prof. Bansal demonstrated it to result from the disruption of GH/IGF-1 axis. In addition, growth hormone was administered to children with CML, receiving imatinib and observed to be beneficial.

    The Dr. M. K. Seshadri Prize was instituted in 1977 by Smt. Seshadri in memory of her husband. It is offered to a scientist for outstanding contributions made in the field of community medicine. The award for the year 2016 is being presented to Dr. Smita Asthana ICMR-National Institute of Cancer Prevention and Research, NOIDA in recognition for her research work 'Cervical cancer prevention'. Dr. Asthana has successfully demonstrated rural community based cervical screening projects in Dadri tehsil of Uttar Pradesh. Screening involved care HPV DNA, Pap and VIA testing on ten thousand women. Cancer, high grade cervical intraepithelial neoplasia (CIN) and low grade CIN were detected and treated by referral to different health care levels.
