Dr. M. N. Sen Oration Award was instituted in 1977 by Dr. K. N. Sen, former Professor of Medicine,
School of Tropical Medicine, Kolkata in memory of his brother Shri M. N. Sen. This award is given to
a scientist for the sustained research work carried out in the field of practice of medicine (clinical,
laboratory or therapeutic). The award for the year 2016 is being presented to Dr. Surender Kumar
Yachha, Department of Paediatric Gastroenterology, Sanjay Gandhi Postgraduate Institute of Medical
Sciences, Lucknow for the research work on 'New dimensions of mechanism and therapeutic impact
explored at global level for specialized childhood disorders'.
Dr. Yachha described safe quantified large volume paracentesis, postulated pathogenesis of
hepato-pulmonary syndrome, defined predictors of outcome in viral hepatitis and coagulopathy,
showed effective medical management of Budd-Chiari Syndrome, and identified 'high-risk' liver
abscess treatable without surgery.
