The Amrut Mody Unichem Prize was instituted by Unichem Laboratories in 1985. This prize is awarded to a scientist for the research work carried out in the field of Gastroenterology/Cardiology/ Neurology/Maternal & Child Health/ Chest Diseases. The award for the year 2014 is being presented to Dr. Virendra Singh, Department of Hepatology, Postgraduate Institute of Medical Education and Research, Chandigarh for the research work on 'Role of vasopressors in cirrhotic ascites and hepatorenal syndrome'. The work of Dr. Singh focuses on the role of vasopressors in ascites and hepatorenal syndrome. Cirrhotic ascites carries high morbidity and mortality. Arterial vasodilatation plays a major role in these patients and causes circulatory dysfunction, refractory ascites and hepatorenal syndrome. The findings proved the beneficial role of various vasoconstrictors as terlipressin, noradrenaline and midodrine in these patients.

The ICMR Chaturvedi Ghanshyam Jaigopal Memorial Award was instituted in 1985 by Dr S. P. Chaturvedi in memory of his parents. This prize is awarded to a scientist for his/her work in the field of Immunology. The award for the year 2013 is being presented to Dr. Nooruddin Khan, Department of Biotechnology and Bioinformatics, School of Life Sciences, University of Hyderabad, Hyderabad for the research work on 'Nutrient sensing and its implications on vaccine-induced protective immunity'. The work of Dr. Khan involves understanding the regulatory mechanisms through which immune cells sense and respond to the conditions of nutrient restriction. The finding suggests that activation of nutrient sensing pathway during amino acid starvation triggers homeostatic processes that elicit anti-viral properties to Flavi-viruses as well provide protection from inflammation associated pathologies during inflammatory bowel disease.

The Dr. Prem Nath Wahi Award was instituted in 1990 by late Dr. P. N. Wahi, former DirectorGeneral, ICMR for significant contributions made by a scientist in the field of basic and/or clinical cytology and/or preventive oncology. The award for the year 2013 is being presented to Dr. Priya Srinivas, Cancer Research Program, 5, Rajiv Gandhi Centre for Biotechnology, Thycaud P. O. Thiruvananthapuram for the research work on 'Preclinical evidence using plumbagin, an ROS inducer against BRCA1 mutated cancers'. Dr. Srinivas and her colleagues proved that a naphthaquinone derivative, plumbagin, isolated from Plumbago species of plants, shows targeted anticancer activity in breast cancer gene-1 (BRCA1) defective cancers. Along with reactive oxygen species (ROS) mediated DNA damage, plumbagin inhibits multiple tumourigenic pathways in DNA repair defective BRCA1 deficient cells, resulting in induction of apoptosis.

The Dr. M.O.T. Iyengar Memorial Award was instituted in 1983 by Smt. Rukmani Iyengar to honour a scientist for carrying out research in the field of malaria, filariasis, plague or medical entomology. The award for the year 2013 is being presented to Dr. Ramesh Chand Dhiman, ICMRNational Institute of Malaria Research, New Delhi for the research work on 'Climate change impacts on malaria and tools for adaptation measures'. Dr. Dhiman is pioneer in assessing the impact of climate change on malaria and dengue in India and provided projected scenario of transmission windows by the year 2030. As adaptation measures, he has contributed for devising the tools of early warning of outbreaks of malaria using climatic parameters and space technology. Dr Dhiman has also contributed for PM's National Action Plan on Climate Change 2008 and generating documents for SEARO WHO.

The Dr J. B. Srivastav Oration Award was instituted in 1978 by Mrs. J. Srivastav in 1978, in memory of her husband Dr J. B. Srivastav, former Director-General of Health Services. It is an award for the work carried out by a scientist in the field of virology. The award for the year 2013 is being presented to Dr Naga Suresh Veerapu, Department of Life Sciences, Shiv Nadar University, Gautam Buddha Nagar for the research work on 'Sporadically reappeared trace amounts of HCV RNA after successful therapy can cause infection'. Dr. Veerapu's work demonstrated that after treating the chronic hepatitis C patients and achieving 60 per cent of sustained virological response (SVR), about 12 per cent of patients had circulating hepatitis C virus (HCV) RNA, suggesting absence of 'virologic cure' in few patients. His work showed that one chimpanzee developed chronic infection from the trace amount of HCV RNA recovered from one SVR patient exhibiting the potential danger posed by low level of circulating HCV RNAs in treated HCV patients.

The Dr. D.N. Prasad Memorial Oration Award was instituted in 1991 by Dr G.V. Satyavati, former Director-General of ICMR. This prize is awarded to an Indian scientist for work in the field of pharmacology. The award for the year 2013 is being presented to Dr. Divya Vohora, Department of Pharmacology, Jamia Hamdard University, New Delhi for the research work on 'Antiepileptic drugsinduced bone disease: mechanisms involved and preventive/treatment strategies in animal models' and 'Investigation on some novel drugs in murine models of epilepsy and co-morbid conditions'. Dr. Vohora contributed innovative insights into epilepsy associated complications. Her work is instrumental in developing mouse models of antiepileptic drugs-induced osteoporosis and demonstrating the role of anti-osteoporotic agents in preventing or mitigating the same. In addition, her research provided evidence for antiepileptic actions of medroxy-progesterone and N-acetylcysteine and managing obsessive compulsive disorder by an antiepileptic drug.
