The Professor B.C. Srivastava Foundation Award was instituted in 1987 by the students and
colleagues of late Prof. B.C. Srivastava, Head of the Department of Preventive and Social Medicine,
K.G. Medical College, Lucknow. This prize is awarded to a scientist for work in the field of community
medicine carried out in medical colleges/recognized institutions. The Award for the year 2014
is being presented to Dr. Chythra R. Rao, Department of Community Medicine, Kasturba Medical
College, Manipal University, Manipal for the research work on 'Risk factors for cardiovascular
diseases'.
Dr. Rao has worked on 'Prevalence of diabetes, hypertension and obesity' in the rural areas
of coastal Karnataka. In community based screening involving anthropometry, blood pressure and
fasting blood glucose measurement among 1200 adults. She has identified a high prevalence of these
non-communicable diseases (NCDs), contrary to the belief that prevalence in rural areas is lower.
Taking the work forward preventive strategies in the form of NCD clinics have been initiated, in the
rural health centres.
