The ICMR Prize for biomedical research conducted in underdeveloped areas
was instituted by the Council in 1983 for scientists who have contributed
significantly to any field of biomedical sciences and is granted for the work
carried out in under developed areas of the country.
The prize for 2007 is being presented to Dr Jagadish Mahanta, Director,
ICMR's Regional Medical Research Centre, NE Region, Dibrugarh for his research
work on 'Epidemiology of communicable and non-communicable diseases in
north eastern region of India'.
Dr Mahanta and his group's contribution in the field of trematode research
in Northeast has brought laurel to the institute. Their land mark research on
paragonimus and pargonimiasis has made major impact in understanding
aetiology, diagnosis and control of endemic haemoptysis. Dr Mahanta has also
been working in the area of vector borne parasitic and viral diseases, primarily
focusing at their control. He led the team of researchers in Regional Medical
Research Centre to understand transmission dynamics of mosquito borne
parasitic and viral diseases and could translate the research finding for the
benefit of public health. Their work on malaria, caused by drug resistant
Plasmodium falciparum, contributed in developing anti-malarial drug policy in
the region.
Dr Mahanta is a recipient of the Annual oration award-2004 of Indian Society
for Malaria and Other Communicable Diseases and is a fellow of Royal Society
of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene, London. He has published 230 research papers
in national and international scientific journals.
