The Drs. Kunti & Om Prakash Oration Award was instituted in 2005 by Messrs Vipul and Rahul Prakash in memory of their parents, Drs. Kunti and Om Prakash. This award is conferred on a scientist for excellence achieved in the field of biomedical sciences. The award for the year 2014 is being jointly presented to Dr. Premashis Kar, Department of Medicine, Maulana Azad Medical College, New Delhi for the research work on 'Infectious disease'. In viral hepatitis, high levels of soluble Fas ligand (sFasL) and tumor necrosis factor (TNF-alpha) predict death and timely referral to transplant-centre. Reduced expression of progesterone-receptor (PR) and progesterone-induced-blocking-factor (PIBF) with high viral load predict poor pregnancy outcome in hepatitis E. High hepatitis A virus (HAV) and gestational hepatitis E virus (HEV) viral loads correlate with severity of liver disease. In acute liver failure, expression of inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS) and endothelial nitric oxide synthase (eNOS) predispose to massive necrosis of liver.
