Dr. H.B. Dingley Memorial Award was instituted in 1988 by Smt. Deepika Kumar in memory of her father, (Late) Dr. H. B. Dingley. This prize is awarded to an Indian scientist for outstanding contribution in the field of Paediatrics. The award for the year 2015 is being presented to Dr. Jhuma Sankar, Division of Paediatric Pulmonology and Critical Care, Department of Pediatrics, All India Institute of Medical Sciences, New Delhi for the work on 'Early goal directed therapy in paediatric septic shock- Comparison of outcome with and without intermittent superior venacaval oxygen saturation monitoring- a prospective cohort study'. Dr. Sankar's work focuses on goal directed therapy in paediatric septic shock, a condition with high mortality rates - up to 50 - in most units in India. By using the 'Early Goal Directed Therapy' (EGDT) protocol, Dr. Sankar could demonstrate about 40 reduction in the mortality rates in these children. This relatively simple and timely intervention could save many lives of poor and vulnerable children with septic shock admitted in hospitals across the country.

The Basanti Devi Amir Chand Prize is the earliest instituted award of ICMR, founded in 1953 by (Late) Major General Amir Chand for the significant research contributions made by scientists in the field of biomedical sciences. This prize is awarded to a research scientist engaged in any area of biomedical sciences. The award for the year 2015 is being presented to Dr. Pramod Kumar Garg, Department of Gastroenterology, All India Institute of Medical Sciences, New Delhi for the research work on 'Idiopathic chronic pancreatitis in India - Phenotypic characterization and strong genetic susceptibility due to SPINKI and CFTR gene mutations'. Dr. Garg's seminal work on the pathophysiology of chronic pancreatitis has changed the conceptual understanding of the disease as seen in India discounting the earlier concepts of toxic and nutritional hypothesis and suggested it to be a genetically determined disease with oxidative stress as an important contributor.

The Amrut Mody Unichem Prize was instituted by Unichem Laboratories in 1985. This prize is awarded to a scientist for the research work carried out in the field of Gastroenterology/Cardiology/ Neurology/Maternal & Child Health/Chest Diseases. The award for the year 2012 is being presented to Dr. Akshay Anand, Professor, Post Graduate Institute of Medical Education & Research, Chandigarh for the research work on 'Neurology'. Dr. Anand has focused on biomarker discovery and animal model approach to advance predictive and therapeutic capacities in disorders of brain. He has described molecular association of risk alleles in PD and ALS on one hand and mechanism of action of Brahmi on the other. This may help in combining traditional and modern approaches in degenerative disorders of brain.

The ICMR Chaturvedi Kalawati Jagmohan Das Memorial Award was instituted in 1975 by Dr. S. P. Chaturvedi in memory of his parents. This prize is awarded to a scientist for his/her work in the field of Cardiovascular Disease. The award for the year 2011 is being presented jointly to Dr. Surjit Singh, Professor of Paediatrics, Advanced Paediatrics Centre, Post Graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research, Chandigarh for the research work on 'Kawasaki Disease should be considered as an important cause of acquired heart disease in children in India'. Dr. Surjit Singh has been involved in the diagnosis, care and follow-up of children with Kawasaki Disease (KD). His follow-up studies have shown that KD can be associated with significant cardiovascular sequelae even in children who do not appear to have overt echo-cardiographic abnormalities during the acute stage.

The Professor Surindar Mohan Marwah Award was instituted by Professor Surindar Mohan Marwah in 1993, Varanasi. This award is conferred upon a scientist for the research work carried out in the field of Geriatrics. The award for the year 2014 is being presented to Dr. Phalguni Anand Alladi, Department of Neurophysiology, National Institute of Mental Health and Neuro Sciences, Bengaluru for the research work on 'Understanding the molecular and cyto-morphological mechanisms of aging and age related neurodegenerative disease'. Dr. Alladi provided neuroanatomical basis for lower susceptibility of Asian-Indians to Parkinson's disease, than Caucasians. Asian-Indians show no age-related loss of substantia nigra neurons. Pathways involving Lewy body formation, endoplasmic reticular stress, apoptosis and growth factor receptors showed only sub-threshold neurodegeneration in Asian-Indians. Her studies also demonstrated the critical role of astrocytes, microglia and oligodendroglia in aging and Parkinson's disease.

This award is conferred upon a scientist for the research work carried out in the field of tropical diseases. The award for the year 2014 is being jointly presented to Dr. Bhagirathi Dwibedi, ICMR- Regional Medical Research Centre, Bhubaneswar for the research work on 'Epidemiology of emerging tropical diseases in Odisha'. Dr. Dwibedi contributed significantly towards clinical epidemiology and setting up diagnostic facility providing public health solutions for emerging vector borne viral diseases especially chikungunya and dengue in Odisha. He has shown alternate regimens with potential use in Global Lymphatic Filariasis Elimination Programme. He has documented evidence of sub-clinical pathology and its reversibility in Wuchereria bancrofti infected children.

The award for the year 2014 is being jointly presented to Dr. Kamla Prasad Mishra, DRDO- Defence Institute of Physiology and Allied Sciences, Delhi for the research work on 'Immunomodulation and viral immunology'. The research work carried out by Dr. Mishra on dengue virus has demonstrated that host proteins like Hsp 60, 70 and protein disulfide isomerase (PDI) are involved in dengue virus multiplication and if these proteins are silenced the virus multiplication rate is significantly reduced. The work has added new dimension in understanding the immunopathogenesis of dengue virus infection and target identification for therapeutics. Currently he is developing plant derived adjuvant and antivirals.

In community based screening involving anthropometry, blood pressure and fasting blood glucose measurement among 1200 adults. She has identified a high prevalence of these non-communicable diseases (NCDs), contrary to the belief that prevalence in rural areas is lower. Taking the work forward preventive strategies in the form of NCD clinics have been initiated, in the rural health centres.
